Kristina Rose had decided to give Jeffrey space to work out whatever feelings he did or didn’t have for her. If she played it cool, perhaps their friendship could be salvaged in the end. She just had to wait, to focus on other things, to try not to obsess.

All of that was much easier said than done, of course.

Thankfully, her other best friend came to her rescue without even knowing that Kristina Rose required saving.

“Get dressed. We’re going out!” Elise shouted as she came charging into Kristina’s apartment without having called ahead or even knocked.

“I don’t want to go out,” Kristina mumbled from where she sat in the kitchen, reading the third Michael Gresham book on her Kindle app. “And anyway, can’t you see that it’s raining?”

Elise pulled on Kristina’s chair and plucked her phone away. “Of course I can see that it’s raining. By going out, I mean going inside. Just not here. You need to get out of this place before you go crazy.”

“I was reading that, you know.” Kristina grabbed for her phone, but Elise was taller and faster.

“You’ll get this back once you’re dressed and ready,” she said, holding the device high above her head. We have . . .” She squinted at the screen. “Twelve minutes to get you ready. Let’s move it! Go.”

“And where are we going in such a hurry?” Kristina asked as her friend pushed her down the hall.

“Clothes first. Questions later.”

“Okay, fine, you win,” she said as Elise popped open Kristina Rose’s closet and grabbed a navy-blue blouse from the nearest hanger. “Now wait in the hall so I can get dressed.”

“Good.” Elise let herself out and clicked the door behind her. “I’ll be out here if you need help,” she called.

“Don’t need help! Thanks!” At least not with this. She’d recovered enough to bend and stoop without feeling like she’d faint from the effort. As Kristina slipped into a pair of army-green pants, she contemplated whether or not she should tell Elise about yesterday’s kiss with Jeffrey. On the one hand, they’d been best friends since middle school, while on the other they were two incredibly different people. Knowing Elise, the moment she found out about what had happened, she’d drag Kristina down to Mabel’s and force her and Jeffrey to talk it out. Elise always had a way of bringing issues to their boiling point and then stirring the pot at just the right time to prevent total spillover.

No, it wasn’t up to Elise to force the issue. This was between Kristina Rose and Jeffrey and best kept private until they themselves knew what was, or wasn’t, developing between the two of them.

“Are you almost done in there?” Elise whined. “We’re down to just six minutes now. C’mon already!”

“Fine, fine, fine.” Kristina rejoined her in the hall. “I’m ready enough for this mystery excursion. Now can I please have my phone back?”

Elise pressed the phone into Kristina’s hand and then dragged her out the door. The rain had slowed
